Get to your real ‘aha’ moment!

For many years I did not understand the progression [of an issue] and this workshop allowed me to see it more clearly” - Monica

You know when you are excited because you think you found the answer as to why you are dissatisfied with something? So, you make a change according to that ‘answer’ but after a bit, you end up feeling the same dissatisfaction?

For example, let’s say you are not satisfied with your job as a counselor, but can’t pinpoint why not.  Then one day you have this great feeling of relief and excitement because you finally ‘discover’ the reason for your dissatisfaction. You are confident that you are feeling dissatisfied because you are exhausted from hearing people’s stories.

Based on your findings, you investigate what you are interested in.  You realize that you love having conversations with people who have immigrated and would love to teach them English.  So, you invest the time to do the teacher training and you land a job as an ESL teacher when you graduate.  That should be it, right? No more job dissatisfaction.

You teach for a few years and that old uncomfortable feeling of dissatisfaction is creeping back. What now?  You thought you had the answer, went to all this effort to make a change, and…you are back in the same situation.  What is going on?

You can imagine this pattern repeating several times over.  With each new effort and each new job, the dissatisfaction continues.  And, now there’s something added to that dissatisfaction.  You notice frustration and disappointment in yourself because you keep making the same decisions over and over without getting to where you want to be.

If you can see yourself in that example, you should keep reading.

Enter how to get to that real aha moment!

By now, you realize your aha moment wasn’t a real aha moment.  Why?  Because you didn’t get to the root of what was causing your dissatisfaction in the first place.  Instead, you lept with the first (maybe second or third) idea that came to your mind.  Being spontaneous can be great in some situations but when you are making a significant change as in a career, taking the time to research for clarity is more valuable than a (false) sense of urgency.

Taking the time to get to the root of your thoughts will land you in a much stronger position to make important decisions in your life.  Translation = You will likely feel more satisfied with the change you made.  And more satisfied with yourself for making the change.  So, instead of feeling frustrated and disappointed with yourself, you will likely feel confident and proud for having the courage to have made the change.

Here’s the good news.  Getting to that real aha moment doesn’t take a lot of time, effort, or money.  No re-training, significant lifestyle change, or large investment is needed to get there.
